Information

A relay is a component that works like a switch, normal relays are mechanical and works by a electromagnet (coil) pulling the contacts together. Other types are also available; like solid state relays, using semi-conductor technology.

Diode protection

When power to the coil is turned off, stored energy is released in the form of a reverse electrical current. This pulse can cause problems with electrical devices, such as AVR controllers. To combat this pulse a diode is installed in the blocking direction over the coil terminals. This kills the reverse electrical current and is essential if the relay is connected to sensitive electrical equipment.

States

N.C (Normally closed)
Means that the current normally flows, but is cut off if the relay or switch is active.
N.O (Normally open)
Means that the current normally is cut, but flows if the relay or switch is active.
