Information
A relay is a component that works like a switch, normal relays are mechanical and works by a electromagnet (coil) pulling the contacts together. Other types are also available; like solid state relays, using semi-conductor technology.
Diode protection
When power to the coil is turned off, stored energy is released in the form of a reverse electrical current. This pulse can cause problems with electrical devices, such as AVR controllers. To combat this pulse a diode is installed in the blocking direction over the coil terminals. This kills the reverse electrical current and is essential if the relay is connected to sensitive electrical equipment.
States
- N.C (Normally closed)
- Means that the current normally flows, but is cut off if the relay or switch is active.
- N.O (Normally open)
- Means that the current normally is cut, but flows if the relay or switch is active.
